Overcome Fear

Happy Birthday to You!

Today is my son’s birthday, so I thought it might be appropriate to reflect on the meaning of birthdays in general. My son asked me the other day why we receive presents on our birthdays. This question (like so many of his questions) caused me to consider the meaning of our birthdays and our lives.

I told him something like, “Well, Liam, that’s one of the ways that we can express our gratitude and appreciation for the people who come into our lives. Birthdays are a good time to do this because it’s the day that we recognize when someone officially started living on this planet.” Or something like that.

Birthdays are causes for celebration. They represent the passing of another solar cycle that a person has been on the earth, breathing air the same air as everybody else.

So far as we know, no one has been able to get onto this planet without a birthday. It’s one of those things that we all share in common. It recognizes that there was a time when we did not live in a physical body and that a time is coming when we won’t live in one again.

Life is so precious. It truly is a gift. And yet every day I see and speak to people who treat it like it’s not worth very much. Just because life is common does not make it any less precious.

There isn’t really a point to this post. I guess I would like to throw out to you the following thoughts:

  1. We have choices, each and every moment, whether we are aware of them or not. Let’s seek to become much more aware of them.
  2. Life is truly a precious gift. Let’s seek to fully and completely accept it as the gift it is. The only way to do this as fully as possible is to ACCEPT IT for the gift it is and STOP RESISTING IT!
  3. Express gratitude to God for the precious and amazing gift that you are. Recognize that God made no mistake in putting you together. You are more than good enough. You are more than deserving of every gift you receive and desire. You are a magnificent child of God and there is nothing you can do to undo that truth. Everything that appears to deny your splendor is temporary. Since these things are going away, you can choose to let them go sooner rather than later. I’m a huge fan of letting them go sooner. It’s much more fun!
  4. Be yourself! Take the risk of actually feeling what you really feel, being who you really are, thinking what you really think, saying what you really want to say, and doing what you really and truly want to do. This is why you are here. Be the blessing you were created to be!

Happy birthday, Liam! And happy birthday to you! Make it spectacular!!!
